Jun 04, 2016 I'll continue to update this post as I find more tweaks to make Java/Swing applications look and feel more like native Mac applications. FWIW, there's more to do to make a Swing application look and feel like a native Mac OS X application. At the very least you need to handle the 'Preferences' and 'Quit' menu items properly through callbacks. Swing's MacOS look and feel is designed to work only on Macintosh computers, in the same way that Swing's Windows L&F is intended to work only on computers running Windows. Because the MacOS Look and Feel runs only on MacOS systems, its archive is stored in a Macintosh format - a stuffed-binhexed format that Stuffit Expander can open. Maybe because Mac OS is tailor-made for Apple hardware whereas Windows settings may need to be less demanding by default to ensure a system functions out of the box. After all, Windows hardware and configurations, unlike Macs, are hugely diverse in comparison. Swing's new Mac look and feel has been tested with Macintosh OS Runtime for Java (MRJ), and with an early access release of MRJ 2.1. MRJ, implemented as a set of shared libraries and other system software files, lets users run Java applets and applications on PowerPC and 68040 computers running Mac OS 8.0 or later.

The default setting for Mac OS is to not display a file's extension. For those who want to view the full filename, rather than having the extension removed automatically , this tutorial will provide information on how to make it so you view the extensions for all files on your computer or for just an individual one.

How to view file name extensions for all files on a Mac

1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.

1. Click on the Finder menu as shown in the image below.
   When the menu opens, please click on the Preferences menu option.
   
2. The Preferences screen should now open in the General category as shown below.
   
   Now, please click on the Advanced button.
   
3. You should now be at the Advanced Finder Preferences screen as shown below.
   Put a check mark in the checkbox labeled Show all filename extensions.
   
4. Now click on the red X button to exit the Finder Preferences screen.

The Mac OS is now configured to show filename extensions for all the files on your Mac.

How to view file name extensions for a individual file on a Mac

1. Navigate to the file that you wish to be able to see its extension.
   
2. When you find your file, right click on it and select the Get Info option as shown in the image below.
   
   
3. When you select the Get Info menu option, the file's information page will be displayed as shown below.
   Expand the Name & Extension category as shown in the image above.
   
4. Under the file name field you should see a checkbox labeled Hide extension. Uncheck this box to have the Mac OS display this file's extension. If you wish to hide the file's extension then you can check this box.
   
5. When you are finished, click on the red X button to close the information screen.
